Przemysław Decewicz is a bioinformatician at the Department of Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology, University of Warsaw, Poland. He has been involved in group development since 2012 when he started scientific work under the supervision of Doctor Lukasz Dziewit. He firstly obtained his BSc degree in bioinformatics and systems biology (2014), followed by an MSc degree in biotechnology (2016), and finally, he got his Ph.D. degree in biology (2020). Currently, he is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Biology, University of Warsaw, and a CEO of DDG Bioinformatics Ltd., a University of Warsaw spin-off company.
Dr. Decewicz focuses his research on genomics and metagenomics of prokaryotes and their mobile genetic elements (MGEs)[ http://ddlemb.com/projects/preludium-decewicz/], in particular bacteriophages[http://ddlemb.com/research/#phages]. During his master's, he did an internship in Professor Robert Edwards Bioinformatics Laboratory (San Diego State University, CA, USA) where he learned about the identification of prophages in bacterial genomes. He applied this knowledge during his Ph.D. to study Alphaproteobacteria phages[http://ddlemb.com/projects/iuventus-plus/] and later in his work on bacteriophages from ancient gold mine Zloty Stok (Poland)[ http://ddlemb.com/projects/opus-radlinska/]. In parallel, he has studied antibiotic resistance (AR) which led to the development of UniPriVal tool for computational validation of (q)PCR primers and in result the LCPDb-ARGs [http://lcpdb.ddlemb.com/](a literature-based, manually-curated database of PCR primers for the detection of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs)).
In REPARES he shares his experience on genomics and metagenomics in studying AR throughout the involvement in e-mobility and student co-supervision, as well as the organization of practical bioinformatics workshop.
