Marta Nierychlo is a member of the Center of Microbial Communities at Aalborg University, Denmark. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in biotechnology in 2013, and since then is working in the group of prof. Per Halkjær Nielsen studying wastewater treatment ecosystems. Her main research activities focus on the application of DNA sequencing methods to study microbes in wastewater treatment plants. Marta has recently been involved in a long-term survey of microbes in Danish WWTPs, followed currently by a large-scale global survey of microbial communities in wastewater treatment systems. Passionate about unraveling the function of unknown microbes in the activated sludge ecosystem and their visualization using Fluorescence in situ hybridization techniques. Developer and active contributor to MiDAS Field Guide that serves as a knowledge platform for all people working with microbes in wastewater treatment systems. In the REPARES project, Marta is involved in the incorporation of knowledge on antimicrobial resistance in wastewater treatment plants into the MiDAS Field Guide.
